Travel photography: A guide

By Bronson Schecter

Over the past ten years there has been a huge boom in travel photography. This is probably to do with the massive range of professional level cameras that are now available at affordable prices, which means just about anyone can take incredible photographs of their holidays. People take photographs to remember events, or to show their friends where they have been, but many also pursue it as a career and a discipline. For this approach it is not just a nice digital camera you need, but a lot of skills and patience too.

Before anything else it is vital that you come into possession of a decent camera and the knowledge of how to use it. Digital SLRs are the way to go for this because film can get very expensive in the long term, and the ability to look at your pictures straight away makes it easier to learn. Rather than sticking with the extremely specific fixed focal length lens your camera probably came with, you should also invest in a more versatile lens.

Understanding the equipment is as important as owning them. Take a long time reading the manual and taking photos with varying settings to get a feel for the relationship between shutter speed, aperture and ISO (or film speed), taking note of the effect it has on the picture.

Now you have your equipment and you have a good understanding of how it works, you can go on to just getting out there and snapping as much as you can. Learning by doing is always preferable than reading, but there are some things you should know just to get you started. For example, midday is not a good time for taking photographs because it makes photographs look shallow when compared with the long interesting shadows that come with late afternoon and early morning. Remember that your surroundings can aid you substantially too. Solid objects like walls or trees can help to steady your hand, and don't be afraid of embarrassing yourself to get a photograph from an interesting vantage point.

Like many things it is practice that will really set you apart from other travel photographers. The more pictures you take in different environments with different equipment, the more you will learn and the more creative you will become. Soon enough you will start interpreting everything you see through a lens.

Rating Of The Best Digital Camera Models Presently Available In The Market

By Mike Morrisson

Looking to purchase an electronic digital cameras? Searching for which is the best digital camera to buy? Well, in this article, we'll discuss the very best digital cameras of 2010 and find out the pros and cons of every one.

There are a great deal of factors you need to consider when you're purchasing a digital camera. These include but are not restricted to the brand, the cost, the features, the build, the consumer reviews, etc. Herein, I'm putting together a list of the best digital cameras according to me. To make it in this list, a camera needs to be really good because I'm someone who is pleased by just every other technology wonder! It has to be seriously, really special to obtain a mention.

So, let's begin...

Nikon D7000 - Nikon is appropriate up there with Canon in terms of making digital camera models, in my opinion. This one is a proof of their benchmarks. A truly stunning camera which has a great viewfinder; the Nikon D70000 has been loved by everyone. It's slightly on the expensive side but again, the cost is cent percent justified.

It's a 16.2 Megapixel camera and in addition it allows you to take stunning videos completely HD (1080P). There are so many features that it'll fill up more than a few pages. If you're a professional photographer, this is for you. If you're not a professional photographer, but somebody who wants to take beautiful pictures, this is for you.

You'll understand what I'm talking about when you hold this camera in your hand. Its a complete masterpiece - the buttons, knobs, controllers have all been placed at the best locations that makes it simpler to use. The image quality is certainly not lower than amazing. What's even better is the fact that this camera is one of the few that you could tote around when traveling. It is among the lighter ones. I looked up for this camera's online reviews and it appears like most people agree with me. It gets an average of 4.5 stars.

Canon EOSD 5D - This camera comes a close second. Actually, I'd say there's a tie between the first as well as second. It is really an equally great camera and if you prefer the Canon brand, this is for you. It's a bit limited in the video capabilities though so if you're high on video, this isn't the digital camera for you. Other than that, the image quality is awesome and you'd adore it, I'm sure. It's costlier than the Nikon's so if your budget is restricted, go for the Nikon.

This is 12.8 MP with a 2.5 inch LCD digital screen. One con for me was that it didn't support as a drive when I connected it to my Mac. I was able to move my work eventually however, I had to go through an entirely different (and painstakingly difficult!) route.

For picture quality & overall features, I'd give this camera a 4 start. For those other things mentioned above, such as the price, I give it a 3 star.

Nikon Coolpix S8100 - If you're shopping on a critically limited budget, this is actually the camera for you. Though it's nowhere close to the quality of the two I've mentioned above, you receive what you pay for. In cases like this, though, you receive much more than what you spend for. The price is very low and when you retain that in mind, the standard and all the other characteristics are extremely good.

I'm not too fond of the body design, though. The controls are put in clumsy areas and you find yourself doing things you didn't attempted to! Overall, this camera gets a 2.5 star based on the characteristics as well as the cost.

Wallpaper Theme Options For IPhone Owners And How To Personalize Them

By Courtney B. Hudson

There are certain features on your iPhones and iPads that make it your own. These features set up your phone that will make it unique and set it apart from other phones of the same brand. Some of these features include a wallpaper that have a varied shape and color to choose from.

For those who want to add more style to their iPhone can surely have the option to choose which one to use. This adds a personality to your phone and you can easily tell that it is your phone when you add such wallpapers.

Acquiring them is easy. All you need to do is to connect to the internet and download it. There will be some wallpapers that are built-in inside your phone but most of them can be downloaded through the internet.

When you download the image, you will have three options either to choose iPad, full screen or widescreen. Choose one that suits best for your phone. The actual size of a wallpaper is 1024x1024. Once you are done selecting the size of your wallpaper you can then save it.

Once the download is done, go to the home window through the home button of your iPhone to check out the wallpaper and see if it looks as good as you hoped it would. You can then click on the photo option to see the wallpaper for other options as well.

There are situations when people are not satisfied with the image they have downloaded and some want to modify their current wallpaper. This is where Photoshop software comes in. This is a feature offered by the iPhone where you can modify the image to your own favorable style.

You can either change the effects of the image or give it a new angle. Some even want to change its natural color to suit their favorite one while others just want to balance the image to their liking. With the help of the Photoshop software, you can easily manage your wallpapers.

But, nothing comes for free as you will have to pay for the software if you want to use the entire version of it. Although you can actually have the option to try it out first using the trial version. They give that free trial to new customers, and from there you can see if it is the right move for you to make.

Beginners Travel Photography: Preparation Tips

By Max Brown

Travel offers you the opportunity to experience unique destinations, the different cultures, people as well as the landmarks of the region. You will no doubt want to capture these memories to treasure and to show family and friends that didn't have the fortune of joining you on your travels. The following beginners travel photography hints will assist you in preparing for the trip.

First of all, you should keep it simple. If you are using a SLR camera, try to take only one camera body, plus a selection of zoom lenses that will cover all focal lengths. A zoom of 35-105mm and a zoom of 70-300mm, for example, should be adequate for all shooting situations. A pocket digital point-and-shoot camera is a good stand by camera, and is useful in situations where you don't want to lug a bulky camera bag full of equipment around. However, don't skimp on memory cards, take plenty of these so that you don't have to forsake any photo opportunities.

There may be situations that require using a tripod, especially when shooting in low light. It is recommended that you carry a mini-tripod for these occasions, as it will not add as much weight to your camera bag as a full tripod. A mini-tripod is much lighter and less bulky than a full-size tripod, remember you are wanting to keep your weight to a minimum.

Travel by its very nature means that your gear will inevitably get bumped around, and be subjected to the elements. A robust camera bag to protect your equipment from knocks and from dust, heat, cold and moisture is very important. Select one that has enough space and compartments to accommodate the equipment you plan to take, that the compartments are easily accessible when you are wanting to shoot, and that it is comfortable to carry.

When you get to your destination and come across a scene that you want to shoot, take you time. Composition can make or break your shot, and will determine whether the result is an ordinary holiday snap or an outstanding travel image. So, don't rush, take time to compose the shot.

And finally, take notes about the places, people and cultures you are shooting. This will help you with sorting, cataloguing, and key-wording your images when you get back home. If you don't, you may struggle to remember interesting facts, or even where the photo was taken, as your memory of the places you visited may get a little bit hazy once you have returned home.

Like I said, cool, huh?

Global Travel - Five New Zealand Towns you really shouldn't miss

By Becky Padmore

New Zealand is an island country in the south-western Pacific Ocean. It's an exceptionally beautiful country with stunning diverse landscapes and it's no surprise that New Zealand is one of the world's most popular global travel destinations. As well as natural beauty spots there are many lovely and interesting towns in the country you should add to your list. Here are five of the best towns in New Zealand:

1. Christchurch - Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island, with a population of over 350,000. The Garden City is also, arguably, the most attractive city in New Zealand, with extensive inner city public gardens and parks, the shallow Avon river snaking it's way though the city centre, and a pedestrian oriented downtown centred on Cathedral Square.

2. Kaikoura - Kaikoura is a town on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It is located on State Highway 1 180 km north of Christchurch. Kaikoura is a special place of lush pastures and towering, snow covered peaks that fall to the sea. This rare magic continues just offshore where a deep undersea canyon combines with unusual sea currents to attract an extraordinary abundance of marine life, the most famous being the Sperm Whale.

3. Nelson - Nelson (the geographical centre of New Zealand) is a region renowned for warm sunshine, fine beaches, lakes, mountains and native forests. Nelson is an intimate, welcoming and friendly city. It is New Zealand's largest fishing port and the gateway to a major forestry and horticulture industry. Add to this the attraction of fine foods, superb wines, an innovative craft industry, spectacular scenery and friendly Kiwi hospitality and you can understand why Nelson is a place to which visitors flock all year round.

4. Queenstown - for true adrenalin seekers Queenstown will be their ultimate destination. Almost every extreme sport you can think of is available here and the international resort attracts people from all over the world who want to skydive, bungee jump or go snowboarding. The Shotover River in Queenstown is now home to the Shotover Jet an incredible and unique vehicle which skids along the river surface.

5. Dunedin - Situated on the south-eastern coast of New Zealand's South Island, Dunedin has a population of around 125,000 and is the main centre of Otago, region recognized for its spectacular scenery. Dunedin is definitely regarded as a beauty spot with dramatic bush-covered hills and valleys at the head of a long natural harbour which attracted Maori settlers to the site over four centuries ago.

What Could you Discover In A Digital Camera

By Geoff James

Equipment is marvelous isn't it? Regularly it appears there are new developments and new & better digital cameras coming to the stores. However how do you choose which is the smart camera? What are mega pixels, Liquid crystal display dimensions & memory sticks? Here is a fast explanation on what to examine.

What does mega pixel mean?

Your digital image is made up of a huge number of little square shapes. Essentially mps are the amount of small squares needed to make your photograph. 1 mega pixel is 1 million little square shapes! The bigger the numeral (4,6 8 mega pixels) the better. The more mega pixels you have, the clearer the photograph. If you want to move in on particular parts of the picture they will be clearer & not as fuzzy with more mps.

What is LCD size?

All digital cameras include a petite computer screen on the back so you can observe what image you're taking without using the viewfinder. You may also review the images you've got. The larger the display, the simpler it is for you to see the images.

Optical or digital zoom?

Ideally you wish to possess both optical & digital zoom. At a time when you could afford it head for a greater optical zoom instead of digital, since the outcomes are sharper. Most reasonably priced digital cameras have an optical zoom between 2x - 12x.

How big a memory card?

Your memory card is the chip where your images are stored before you transfer the images to computer or print them out. All of the main makes of camera has a distinctive sort of memory card consequently make sure you get the right one. A good number of cameras include a little memory card, therefore it can be sensible to consider obtaining a larger one to include a larger number of images on. They now go to 2 GB or higher, that will possess thousands of images.

You'll notice many groovy digital cameras in the shops that are great for everyday use & will not break the bank. The prices look to be falling constantly as well so do not pay too much for an all singing, all dancing model if all you need are good holiday and relatives snaps.

Submit your work to photo websites

By James Aldana

Many people take pictures everyday and some of them will definitely want to improve them. In most cases, you will need to learn Photoshop, and with the right courses, this is easy to delve into. You don't need to worry, even if you are a beginner, because there are a lot of tutorials on the web that will help you learn how to have your work submitted to Portfolio Websites successfully.

As such, you will need to first have your image opened in your favorite software, aka Photoshop. After that, just swipe to the tools panel and then click on the magic wand tool. Using it, have your selections made. After that, just hold down the shift key while clicking on certain areas, you will see that you will be able to select not one, but more areas at once. If you do something wrong, then just press control plus z and the last action will be canceled. Don't be troubled, as soon you will see your artwork displayed on a very prestigious Art Portfolio Website.

After you made your selection, push the right mouse button go to "Layer via copy". A new layer will get to be created featuring a single color.

There will be two layers now, if you take the time to look at the layers panel. In order to have the layer hidden, next to the "Layer one" you will need to unclick the eye image. If all is ok, click the space where the eye icon could be found before making "Layer one" reappearing. After this, just have the same steps followed like when you had to choose a color so that every of the colors will have separate layers to be featured in.

Using the magic wand when you are selecting a small area is not advised, so make a new layer thus and use the text tool to rewrite the TM. The font and the color in which the TM was initially written in, will need to get changed.

Now just hide all of the layers, yet don't do that for the one that holds the color you wish to have the TM printed in. Next, have Merge Visible selected. At this point, all of the layers will share the same layer. As such, following these tips, you will soon get to have all of your works easily accepted to a Portfolio Website.

Advantages of Modern Slide Scanning Services

By Jennifer Hoskins

If you have had to maintain old slides whether they were the 35mm variety of others, you know how big a problem it can be. In order to save them from any exposure, you probably have stored them in the attic and even forgotten about them. however, using modern slide scanning services, you can really get all those slides back in top shape and make them even better looking.

When you hand your slides over to a scanning service, it is scanned and stored in one of the digital formats. Once this is done, they can be stored anywhere digitally. That can be on your PC or Mac or even thumb drives, where they will be safe and never deteriorate. Scanning technology has come a long way over the past few years and especially over the past 10 years.

Scanned slides can be stored in any one of the numerous digital formats by the slide scanning services such as JPEG, PNG, BMP etc. all these formats differ somewhat in their quality and resolutions. Slides scanned and converted into the JPEG format are very small in size. They are ideal if you have thousands of slides to be scanned. Keep in mind though, that the quality of picture may not be the best, although it is perfectly acceptable.

If you want very high quality images, which are as good as the original slides, you would want to go with the PNG format. The problem with PNG format images is that they occupy a lot of space, which can go into several megabytes. If you have a large enough hard disk storage, which is inexpensive these days, you can store thousands of scanned slides in this format.

If you have decided to finally scan those slides of yours, you just need to do some preparation. The first job would be to group the slides into neat categories so that they are easy to scan and store in their own folders. Secondly, make sure that the slides are as clean as possible. Old slides that have been stored away for years may have gathered a lot of dust and may have attracted some stains.

After the best of your efforts, if some dirt specs still remain on the slides, you have help in the form of photo editing programs. You can virtually remove any kind of undesirable elements from your photos. The best of such programs are the famous Adobe Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro. Inexpensive alternatives also exist such as Pixelmator for the Max as do free options such as GIMP.

One of the thoughts that might cross your mind is why not scan all those slides at home rather than spending on professional slide scanning services? If you only have a few photos and just want to carry them on your smart phone and don't need high quality, using your home scanner is a very practical choice.

However, if you want high quality images, you need professional slide scanning machines to do the job which is most often only available only with scanning services. Besides, if you have many, many slides to be scanned, doing the job at home can take days and probably will be more expensive in terms of power usage.

Printing For Professional Photographers: You're Dealing With The Best, Aren't You?

By Kevin Browne

Prepping endlessly for jobs, being in perfect shooting locations with the best lighting possible on the days of the shooting and then selecting the most perfect proofs all mean nothing if the printing for professional photographers you choose falls flat. Digital Photography

By David James

You might want to consider using digital photography to make some extra money. Digital photography is a hobby that is becoming more and more popular, as most people today have a digital camera in their home. If you just have a little bit of creativity digital photography can turn into a money making business. There are a great many ways you can put that camera to work to generate an income.

All you really need to be successful is drive and dedication to get work done, as well as a little bit of salesmanship.

Odds are that you already own the equipment needed to begin, if you already enjoy digital photography as a hobby. Things you will need are a digital camera, preferably one with similar features of an SLR film camera, a high-quality printer or printing service, and a good tripod.

Digital photo editing software is also a must have. Adobe products like Photoshop CS3, Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0, and Adobe Photoshop Light room are among the best digital image editing software applications on the market, along with Corel Paint Shop Pro X.

If possible, you should invest a couple hundred dollars in marketing materials.

Before we move on, this is a good time to clear up one misconception. It is not impossible to make a good income from your photography, as many people think. Naysayers refer to the fact that pretty much everybody has a digital camera at their disposal, or at least one on their phone. Most people think that no one will pay for pictures when people can take their own pictures.

You can do it this way. The fact of the matter is that everyone has some sort of camera. But how competent are they at using it?

Take a look at the pictures many people take. Be honest with yourself. These pictures suck. Motion blur from holding the camera incorrectly. Bad color or subjects that are positioned awkwardly. Basically, they do not possess composition skills. Dark shadows obscuring a subject's face. Even those people that know how to use photo editing software may need help when it comes to taking amazing pictures. There is only so much you can do to correct a poor photograph.

What do you think is going to happen when these people try and print their photos? I am sure that you have seen some of these horrible images. The prints are horrendous when it comes to resolution. The person taking the photograph had no understanding of the camera settings that ensure pictures suitable for printing.

This is where you come in. Use your extensive digital photography skills to work up a few samples that you can show to potential customers and reel them in.

Maybe you do not think this is likely. Let me tell you about a birthday party I attended recently. The hostess hired an amateur photographer who was striking out to start her own business, much like you are.

Most of the people at the party brought their own digital cameras, but most people forgot to take pictures. Those of us who did take snapshots were poorly positioned and usually couldn't get a good view of the scene.

Of course, the photographer was paid for her services. She then uploaded the pictures to her own website. The party guests were sent an email with a link to the page. We downloaded the photos we wanted and printed them or saved them to our computer.

The photographer didn't even have the expense and work of printing and delivering photos - but was paid generously for her services.

Pretty awesome, huh? Anyone can do this! So, learn all you can about photography and photo editing, create a marketing plan, and get out there!

Hot Digitals - The Canon EOS 500D

By Patricia Harman

March 2009 saw the advent of Canon's new distinct offering, the Canon EOS 500D as the dream camera of every photographer. It is a DSLR camera where DSLR stands for Digital Single-Lens Reflex that combines many excellent features including Full HD video functionality.

The Canon EOS 500 makes use of Canon's CMOS technology, which is an industry standard for image noise reduction, minimized power consumption and increased frame rate potential. The image captured by the camera's CMOS sensor is then processed by Canon's DIGIC 4 image processors before it is stored into the Canon EOS 500 D's memory card. The DIGIC technology makes use of advanced image processing algorithms, which results in images that have accurate white balance, precise colors, and advanced noise reduction. The camera's highly responsive operation and fast start-up times can be attributed to its unbelievably fast DIGIC processing speeds. With this high-speed processing camera, you can have snapshot sprees and you'd still get decent image quality even during long continuous shooting bursts.

There are a few types of technologies incorporated into the Canon EOS 500D camera; namely, CMOS, DIGIC and EOS technologies which work together efficiently and effectively. The EOS technology integrates a cleaning system which will lower, reject and remove dust that may lower image quality at the sensor. Photography Through The Years

By Sarah Gould

Today, we enjoy the availability and convenience of digital cameras, which are present practically everywhere and integrated in almost every modern electronic device. For this reason, a lot of people have easily been able to take up, and enjoy photography, and almost everyone can be a photographer. But it took over two hundred years of modern development, using concepts dating back thousands of years, before it reached this point.

Long before the dawn of chemical photography, our ancient ancestors have already begun experimenting on the fundamentals and concepts that will make photography possible. Ancient philosopher Mo Ti, and almost at the same time, Greek mathematicians Euclid and Aristotle, have toyed with what is called a pinhole camera, from as far back as the 5th and 4th centuries BC. But it wasn't just the ancient Greeks and Chinese that experimented, because during this time, Byzantine mathematicians have also been using their form of a camera obscura for multiple experiments.

Those examples, however, only played around with the principles behind the craft, but true photography wouldn't really exist until 1826, when the very first actual and permanent photograph was made. The first photo was made by Joseph Nicephore Niepce, when he used a polished pewter plate, and bitumen of Judea, a material that hardens when exposed to light. When the bitumen hardened on the plate, the negative image left behind could then be coated with ink, and pressed on paper to produce a print.

From that point onward, very similar processes would be developed, each one taking one step further. The next big step would be made by Fox Talbot in 1840, when he invented the calotype process, which used paper sheets coated with silver chloride to create an intermediate negative image that can then be used to reproduce positive prints. This silver chloride covered paper was a precursor of the modern chemical film.

But it wasn't just film and camera technologies that were being advanced during that time, because even the methods of taking photos were taking huge strides. In 1849, a Russian photographer named Count Sergei Lvovich Levitsky, a man who created a bellows camera design that improved the way photographers would focus, began using artificial light in studios, to take photos of subjects. It was a far cry from the old ways of using simple or natural light, and have earned him numerous awards during his time, in addition to beginning the trend of studio photography.

All of these past milestones laid the groundwork for further development, which would lead to us enjoying the benefits of modern cameras today. Digital photography is now the norm in many areas, opening the doors to further developments in photography in the future. This would then attract even more people to photography, both as a hobby and as a career.
