Lighting Concepts

By Markus Antonio

A cameraman, or more specifically, a cinematographer, has the job of painting with lights, so one must know how to mimic certain situations and be able to manipulate the light to their liking, as well as the director's. There are four things you need to consider when setting up lights: movement, placement and intensity. This is how they break down:

Movement: When light moves, it can mean a number of things. A character could be approaching a scene, a light could be "going out" which could create a creepy basement interrogation scene, or it could be something along the lines of a dance party or perhaps a rave of some kind. Maybe flashes are needed to mimic paparazzi taking pictures, in which case a lot of movement is needed as that could consist of a bunch of consecutive flashes from all over the frame.

Placement: Depending on where you place the light on a character, it creates different shadows on their faces and can create different moods and can change the way you look at someone. For instance, when you light someone from the bottom, it creates an evil look. Remember when you'd go camping and you'd scare your little sister by placing a flashlight under your chin, turning it on and making a scary face? Just like that. The more lights you use, the less shadow you will create, so using just one light will create more shadow and make a character look darker and more mysterious.

Lighting your actors appropriately is also very important because where the light is placed will cast different shadows on their faces. The lower the light, the more ominous someone will look and also keeping them in half light and half shadow-not revealing their whole face. If you think of a light as a little sun and then shine it on your actors according to the time of day you're trying to mimic, thinking about the angle of the sun during that time of day will also help you manipulate the light to your liking. Protagonists tend to get lit brighter and their eyes are shown more to the audience to keep a connection. The antagonists tend to be darker lit and their eyes are not seen as much so the audience doesn't feel as connected to them and they seem less trustworthy.

Intensity: As a Yiddish proverb once stated, "The eyes are the mirror of the soul." Eyes also tell a lot about a character-if they're lying, feel uncomfortable, sad or happy-you name it. You can also read subtext through eyes, meaning one can look into another's eyes and tell what they're really feeling as opposed to what they said they felt. This is one reason why mysterious characters or villains tend to be lit less because of their dark demeanor. Most of the time, villain's eyes are not seen as well because they're lying or the production does not want the subtext of the character to be read as well. Not seeing someone's eyes also makes them less trustworthy.

You'll notice in dramas that the character's eyes are very well lit and will almost always have that "twinkle" in them. This is because in dramas, subtext is more important than other genres because drama is all about saying one thing and meaning another, so the eyes must be seen. Brighter light brings out a happier mood, hence why comedies tend to be brighter most of the time. If one were to sit in a dark house all day, they'd probably feel a little worse than if they sat in a well-lit house all day. The same goes for light intensity and how it provokes emotion from the audience.

Color: Playing with colored light is fun and challenging. A cameraman must know about the color wheel because if you white balance on a color, the camera will tint the frame with the opposite color. Sometimes cinematographers will want their film to be tinted a certain color for a theme they're trying to convey, in which case knowing what color to white balance on is key. Different skin tones get lost with certain colors so it's also good to know what pops out and what doesn't pop. The color of the light also helps the audience distinguish between the times of day. Sunlight is always bluer and incandescent lights are always more orange in color. Color also makes people feel a certain way, so having a color scheme for characters in both wardrobe and lighting is very common.

Once you fully understand these concepts, putting them all together and creating a specific mood, time and place becomes easier and more fun as time goes on and you learn more. Each project presents more obstacles to overcome and packs more creativity into your head of never-ending learning. With each set comes new people and new ideas to share and learn. The cameraman is always learning and growing with each project.

Tips For Model Photography Being A Self-Marketing Tool

By Dora Kent

There are many instances where model photography can make a very challenging profession. However, most of the time, it is the right combination of fun and hard work. People who pursue model photography will know how important it is for a model to look good in all the pictures he or she takes. In addition, it takes real hard work to be able to keep a person looking great in photographs all the time.

The Model and Model Photography Are Highly Interdependent

We know the models' job has been tightly attached to the ads. Often a model will look for a job with the leading advertisement agencies he or she knows, desperate for an interview. Here, the most efficient tool of the models is their portfolio. This is where they compile their credentials as well as file their photographs as a proof of their capacity to fit in to any particular ad. The agency goes through the portfolio, and if they find the photographs impressive enough, they will call the model(s) for an interview.

In this connection model photography becomes an excellent tool. Some models, instead of offering their portfolio (which is very expensive and time taking to makes), prefer to leave their composite cards. You can consider the composite card for the model, just as you would consider the business card for a businessperson, i.e. the first contact information sheet.

The first thing you should know and realize is that there are millions out there who look as good as you or even better. Why should the advertiser choose your resume above that of others? If you ask yourself this question, you will realize how important the role of a contact sheet is. Hence, if you want to attract the right kind of attention, make sure that the first impression is right. Make sure you create the right impact at the very first time. You will not get a second chance to create your first impression.

The composite card will have your headshot on the front and at four or five long shots in different positions and postures on the back. The other information besides your name, which you will need to have printed on each and every composite card you are offering as a resume for your model photography assignment are:

1. Your previous experience (never leave this column free; if nothing else write that you have volunteered at some place or invent something plausible) 2. Type of work you would prefer to do 3. Your vital statistics (height, weight, chest size, waist size, hip size and so on),

Then, follow it up diligently, just as you would do with your resume when you apply for a job.

Lighting

By Mark A Cella

The biggest job a cinematographer has on set is directing how the lights look in the frame. He knows everything about the lights and what they represent. The cinematographer is the master of lighting. Working closely with the director and gaffer of the production, the cinematographer creates a happy balance of lighting in the frame to produce a realistic picture. There are four key concepts a cinematographer utilizes when setting up lights: movement, placement, intensity and color. This is how I describe each:

Movement: "Why is the light moving?" "How much is it moving?" These are two questions a cameraman or cinematographer must ask himself. If there is no movement, fine-the scene is still. Movement causes curiosity, chaos and directs the eye to a certain place in the frame. If not trying to recreate a scene that requires lights to flicker, turn on and off at a certain rate or move back and forth as if searching for something, movement of light is not required-it just helps to make a more believable situation if necessary. Some examples of scenes that use light movement would be in a scene where the lights are going out or flickering or something like an interrogation scene. Movement could also be used to portray a lightning or a massive earthquake where everything is falling down and the power is going out. Also, any sort of club or party scene would use not only moving lights but colored lights as well.

Light placement on characters also creates different moods because depending on where you shine the light on someone; different shadows will project onto their faces. The darker the light, the more equivocal someone will look. Lighting from below will make someone look more suspicious and placing light more on the face so you can see a character's eyes better will make them look friendlier and more trustworthy. Protagonists are usually better lit and more visible while antagonists are darker lit to keep them in the shadows more and to portray a darker character whom is up to no good.

Intensity: The intensity of a light can easily create different moods. Try sitting in a dark room for ten minutes. Then try sitting in a well-lit room for ten minutes. Most likely, sitting in a well-lit room will make you feel better and happier. Perhaps your mind was wondering more in the light and you felt more scared in the dark because you didn't know what was around you. The same goes for lighting a movie.

Intensity can also be used to represent times of the day. Obviously it's not going to be bright outside at 10PM, so you'll need to use dimmer lights and add some color to them. A scene with a romantic dinner would use dimmer lights as opposed to a reenactment of a football game at night. Each scene calls for a realistic intensity of light and your job as a cameraman or cinematographer is to find that realistic balance. A good idea is to take note of the light around you in every day situations-see how intense the light is, where it's coming from and what color it emits. This will help you create more realistic lighting situations in the movies you make.

Digital Camera Review

by: Roberto Sedycias

There are so many models of digital cameras available in today’s market, that it becomes a rather difficult task to pick the best buy among so many options. Perhaps a few steps should be taken into consideration when choosing the right camera. Will the camera be for daily use, or just for special occasions like birthdays, family reunions, etc. Will the price of the camera make much difference on the pocket?

Assuming that price is not an issue, one should choose a well known major brand camera and if possible, go for the latest model and with the highest number of mega pixels available. The higher the mega pixels, the better the picture will be specially if there is an intention of having photo enlargements quite often. A good quality optical zoom lens will also make a big difference. Choose a camera which comes with a battery that holds a good charge, this way you can enjoy lots of picture taking without having to be worried when the battery charge will come down.

The range of features available make a digital camera very cost effective and more than likely you will be able to find the right camera suited to satisfy your needs.

If you enjoy printing enlargements of your photographs, you may want to pay close attention to the printing size and what is required in mega pixels for you to have good quality results. For you to have an idea of the amount of mega pixels required for most commonly used size of prints, refer to the chart below:

For photos 2x6 inches - 2 mega pixels
For photos 5x7 inches - 3 mega pixels
For photos 8x10 inches -7 mega pixels
For photos 11x14 inches - 14 mega pixels
For photos 16x28 inches - 28 mega pixels
For photos 20x30 inches - 54 megapixels

The handling and design also matters and the lightweight ones are much nicer to carry around. Choose a camera that is user-friendly and make sure that you have a good local technical assistance in case you may run into problems with it.

There are several advantages of having a digital camera instead of the old traditional film camera. First of all, there are no films to be purchased ever. You make take dozens, perhaps hundreds of photos and instantly delete the ones you don’t like, or that did not came well into focus and just keep the best ones. You may load them into your computer album, record them and you may view your favorite photos from you camera or from your television set. Some digital cameras also come with a recording device that allows you to record special events and replay them immediately after recording

Digital cameras take pictures that are stored in digital media. It is possible to select, save or delete photos without any cost whatsoever. The photos are usually stored in media cards into the hundreds, meaning that you can take as many pictures as you like before you run out of space. Also in most digital cameras, the user can view the pictures on the LCD screen, which will allow him to pick the best ones.

No wonder that digital cameras became so popular and accessible item to almost everyone. It became a must to have one nowadays and even cell phone cameras are getting better everyday with noticeable improvements in quality of picture taken. The earlier models of cell phone cameras were somewhat limited as far as picture quality is concerned comparing to the ones we find on today’s market. The mega pixels are increasing constantly and so the quality of the cameras. If a person needs to carry both at the same time, maybe a cell phone with a digital camera built in will be an interesting option to consider

If you have not bought yet a digital camera, maybe this the right time to do so, considering the manufactures are offering so many new models with new features at bargain prices. It is wise to compare the several models among different manufacturers and also the prices from traditional and online stores. Make sure you do your research right, and most likely you will find the digital camera you are looking for.

Slow Shutter Speeds and Long Exposure Photography

by: Rick Blythe

Many new cameras will come with built-in shutter speeds of up to 30 seconds or longer, which is enough for most long-exposure photography. Other cameras will have a B (bulb) setting that will keep the shutter open as long as you keep your finger on the shutter release button or a T (time) exposure setting that will keep the shutter open until you press the shutter release button a second time. Cameras with bulb settings can also be fitted with a locking cable release so that it isn't necessary to keep your finger on the shutter for long exposures. If your camera doesn't have a cable release, you can use the self-timer option found on most cameras. This will eliminate camera vibration from your hands.

A tripod, or something to rest your camera on, is essential because the camera must be completely still during the time that the shutter is open. If you want to make a fast-moving car blur as it speeds by you, a relatively fast shutter speed of 1/20 of a second may give you the results you are after, however, if you want to make stars in the nighttime sky look like glowing rings as the earth rotates, your exposure may last all night.

The light meter on your camera may not be able to accurately judge the best aperture setting for longer shutter speeds, especially in low-light situations, so your best bet is probably to "bracket." This means taking up to six pictures of the same subject, but doubling the shutter speed each time. This will give you a variety of effects and exposures and allow you to choose the best shot. In general, slow shutter speeds will allow a lot of light into the camera, which means that you will want to use a small aperture (ie. f/22) to avoid over-exposing the shot. In bright daylight it will be necessary to use the lowest ISO available and a neutral density filter to cut the light down.

Some great effects and shutter speeds to try are:

Moving stars: several hours
Moving cars at night: 10 seconds
Waterfalls: 4 seconds +
Amusement park rides: 1 second

Digital Or Film Photography

By Michael Colucci

The popularity of digital cameras may have enjoyed amazing increase but film has still an important part to play in photography and will continue to be important for some time, a few years at the least. Film has many advantages that photographers continue to recognize. Major players in the production of film like Kodak is still putting into it millions though experts all agree that digital film will reign supreme in the near future.

These are the reasons though why some photographers prefer film over digital:

1) Facilities and Investment

Ordinary people, not only photographers, have invested considerably in photographic equipments that use film. Cameras and lenses still have capabilities that digital photography cannot match. Compared with a high-end professional 35mm camera, a digital camera still lacks facilities that only the traditional camera can provide. A photographer who decides to switch to digital may find himself spending big especially if his lenses, flashes and other accessories are not compatible with a new digital system.

2) Wide Angle

The absence of extreme wide-angle lenses and a slow start-up time are two of the most disadvantages of even the best digital cameras. 35mm cameras modifies to digital bodies usually employ a CCD image sensor that is smaller, usually around 245mm x 16mm) as opposed to the 36mm x 24mm x 35mm film that results to a narrow angle. Photographers who are fans of wide angles may find the traditional 35mm more of their liking.

3) Action

Film cameras also offer an advantage during fast-changing and unpredictable photography scenarios. Unlike digital camera that uses batteries than can ran out in the most unexpected time, a 35mm camera can be easily switched on and ready for use whenever you need take a shot. Moreover, digital cameras usually take several seconds before you can use it which obviously is a disadvantage for photographers who wants to capture actions which can’t be repeated anymore.

4) Tough Conditions

Film cameras are also sturdier equipments than their digital counterparts and can withstand harsh conditions that photography may demand in the line of work. Count on film to be more reliable than digital especially when your are working in a not-so-good weather conditions.

5) Comparing Costs

When it comes to cost, film and digital advantages and disadvantages vary considerably depending on the usage. A photographer with a film budget amounting to thousands of dollars in one year may find digital camera more practical. But if you are not a busy photographer, your income may not defray the cost of going digital.

How To Take A Great Photo

Most adults have taken a good photograph at some point. But what really sets the really good photos out from the average photos?

Here are some steps you can follow to take those great photos more often.

1- Hold The Camera Steady - This is very important. Steady your upper body by tucking your elbows in for support. As you take the photo hold your breath so that at the point of taking the photo the camera is completly still.

2-When To Use The Flash - Alot of cameras will have an auto flash function built in. Aiming the flash at your subject will reduce the quality of the photograph due to the lack of shawdows. Try aiming the flash to bounce of a ceiling or wall. If you often find your subjects have read eye in the photograph try and find the function on your camera that can reduce this.

3- Use the Natural Light - If there is natural light then use it. If your not sure and its low light take one photo with the flash and one without.

4- The Rule Of Thirds - Picture in your mind an area/grid divided into horizontal and vertical thirds. Instead of placing your subject bang centre of the grid try placing them on one of the four lines. Makes a more interesting picture. See image below for an example.

I hope these 4 simple steps help you take more great photographs.
