Dressing Up A Wall Using Paintings

By Christopher Carson

For your information, decorating walls is more than just about driving a nail or screwing a hook. The task requires a lot of consideration than you think. A blank wall may be a real challenge, but if you know the basic of hanging arts, you can turn that challenge into an opportunity. Here are some tips you might find helpful whenever you attempt to beautify the walls of your home using artwork.

It's a common principle to create or find a focal point whenever you're trying to decorate a blank space like a room or a wall in this case. This is especially true if you're going to use small pictures as your decoration. It's also imperative to sketch a layout of your desired arrangement first before starting to hang the pictures.

When working with smaller pictures, leave as little space as possible between frames. Spreading the pictures all over the wall can ruin the visual contact. Moreover, avoid hanging them in a level higher than your line of sight. Instead, hang them at an eye level or even lower for better visibility.

Use more than one hook in hanging frames. Picture frames with only one hook can be moved easily. It can also increase the picture's risk from falling and getting damaged. When hanging larger and heavier frames, try to use chains to secure them instead of nails or hooks.

While it's okay to hang pictures on your own, it would be best to find someone to assist you so that you can estimate how high the frames should be positioned on the wall. Have your assistant hold the picture while you do the estimating. For walls that do not seem perfectly straight, use a carpenter's level. Nevertheless, the eye is still the most effective tool for making sure you get the right adjustment.

Always remember to find a center that will serve as your basis for the arrangement. Hang the pictures one by one, either from left to right or vice-versa until you're done with the wall. In case you need some help from an expert, don't hesitate to look for one. However, you have to take into consideration the fact that hiring a professional can be costly.

Fall Shades of 2010

By Laura B Olson

Fall colors are here and shades of Harvest represent good and plenteous times. The paper industry has always been closely aligned with fashion shades of the season. Dramatic and earthy can best describe the fall shades of 2010.

Moss has worked itself into our world of color as an unassuming yellow-green range that can be over-looked amongst the healthy Harvest shades. To add a little more dimension to this, we introduce the reddish-brown shade of Russett which typically drives its attention to the organic plant world or healthy, warm meal. Russett and Moss are both vivid and subtle this Fall and can be used in combination with each other or they are both strong enough to stand alone.

Gold we know from the earliest centuries represents worth, quality and value. Gold being one of the more constant shades throughout the seasons cannot be dismissed yet is a highly desired addition to the shades of harvest. The proper shade of gold will always elevate your color combinations to the higher, more attractive levels by simply weaving in this glimmer to complete the combination of colors. Not to forget that gold can range into the antique family which then can stand alone as yet another rustic, earthy color of the season.

Cognac with its burnt shades of copper and browns is a unique, traditional harvest color. The brandy that bears the name Cognac is held to a very high standard when it is distilled and aged. Much like this beautiful copper-shade, it is appreciated for its fine quality and appearance. Mix your Cognac shade with a brushed pewter for Fall and you will have tipped the glass for a fine combination and presentation.

Designing with harvest colors is enjoyable and somewhat comforting. While creative thoughts are transpiring, try other popular harvest shades such as olive, pewter, bordeaux and eggplant. Something about the season makes you want to explore with shades as we watch tree leaves change and present beautiful color combination. Be inspired to mix your colorful thoughts and create your new favorite design.

The Essentials Of A Waterproof Digital Camera

By Ian G Hollingsworth

The main advantage of a waterproof digital camera is that it can be used in or around wet locations. For example, the camera can be used in a swimming pool area or at the beach and remain functional when it is touched by wet hands. It can also keep taking pictures even when it is submerged in the water. These cameras also have the ability to capture photographs of water sports or underwater wildlife. They are able to take pictures of water activities such as swimming, water polo, scuba diving and surfing.

Digital cameras that are manufactured to be waterproof are typically able to withstand depths of up to three metres. Some cameras are able operate in depths of up to ten metres. These cameras are often made with additional durable features. For example, they are able to operate after being dropped or damaged. These robust cameras also can withstand extreme high or low temperatures, and can often be crush proof.

A camera with such a robust set of features is designed to take photographs in a variety of different situations and environments. A user can take pictures of water sports, extreme sports and generally all outdoor activities, even if they are particular action-packed. With such a huge range of cameras available for purchase, consumers are advised to shop around for the best price and specification to match their particular needs.

The majority of waterproof digital cameras offer similar if not the same photographic features as the standard models. They are generally easy to use, operated by the conventional point and shoot function. They offer the standard zoom option, an internal memory to store multiple photographs and a rechargeable battery.

Picture quality should be an important factor for those wanting to take photographs. The more megapixels a product has, the sharper an image will be. Most digital devices allow you to transfer the photographs you take onto a computer via its USB port. Many new models however offer advanced features such as a touch-screen LCD display and the ability to film High-Definition Movies underwater.

There are a huge range of digital cameras available to consumers. A good place to start looking for one would be the internet, where there is online stores with deals on waterproof cameras. They should also look for a camera store in their local area, where they will be able to physically see and hold the product before purchase.

Cameras are often small enough to fit into a pocket, which is especially convenient if someone if playing water sports and wants to take a picture. The majority of cameras are also designed differently from the standard models. They are often colorful or eye-catching in design.

For professional divers or those interested in diving and taking photographs, then the conventional model will not realistically be suitable for the depths you will reach. The ten metres limit of most devices will not be deep enough. In this instance, an individual is advised to purchase a digital camera that also comes with a waterproof casing. This casing can usually keep it operational is depths of around forty metres.

Before purchasing their digital camera, consumers should evaluate the range of features and specifications of each product and make an informed choice. They should consider their budget limitations as well as their need for additional features such the drop proof or freeze proof qualities.

The Major Problems with HDR Software

By Erin Jackson

As you can probably tell, we're pretty big proponents of HDR photography and HDR software. The ability to create amazingly realistic photos can't be matched by traditional photographic techniques. That said, for all of the fantastic advantages of HDR, there are certainly some drawbacks.

Many people who are against HDR can rattle off drawbacks and problems, and some of there are pretty spot on. Here are a few of the biggest downsides to HDR.

Images More Prone to Noise. The fact of the matter is, the more images your computer has to process together, the noisier the final result is going to be. If you're used to shooting at night or at high isos this could potentially be a big problem for you. Luckily there is some fantastic noise reduction software out there, but it can be pretty expensive.

Way Too Much Over-saturation. Let's face it most HDR beginners love over saturated surreal photos. Is that what makes good HDR? Most often the answer is no. But when people are learning, this is usually the route they take. By the time they get good enough to know better they've probably given up on learning the art of HDR and moved on to something else. In the end this leads to an over abundance of ugly photos.

Tough to Make Good HDR. The truth is, while the concepts behind HDR may be easy, creating that spectacular shot is anything but. It's such a combination of actual photography knowledge along with digital editing know how that most hobbyists fail to grasp some of the fundamental concepts.

Just like with anything else, there are going to be upsides and downsides to HDR. I imagine this will be an ongoing debate as technology advances and it gets easier for people to get into HDR. Despite any potential downsides however, I will remain a big proponent of the technique and look forward to seeing it expand in the coming months and years.

From milled wood blanks to finished pieces of art: a guide

By Jonathan Handrelf

This tutorial will walk you through the steps necessary to create a beautiful writing instrument using simple woodcraft tools. Handmade pens make beautiful gifts, and do a nice job of displaying the quality of figured wood as well as the expertise and creativity of the woodworker Creating a spindle-turned pen from a wood pen blank is within the reach of most hobbyists, and the finished product can be obtained in just a few hours' time, requiring much less time and experience than would be necessary for a larger piece of art or furniture.

When working with a lathe, you should be prepared with a variety of tools that you'll use to shape the wood as it turns. You can find toolsets specifically for this purpose, including practically everything necessary for getting started. These include gouges, chisels, scrapers, and skews.

Most kits work with a standard size of 3/4" square wood blanks. You'll find that simple pieces of wood tend to be unremarkable, and do not show enough contrast as you might be wish for your handmade pen body. You'll need to use figured wood, which emphasises a knotty and whorled grain pattern with rich colors, for a truly stunning piece. Of course, these materials are much less commonly available and are more costly than alternatives, but the strong, contrasting grain pattern and spalting that you can see in figured wood is more than worth the expense. You can find these pen turning blanks available from mail-order, Internet, and retail hobby stores.

You can place woodturning blocks on a lathe using one of two methods. Spindle turning, especially appropriate for smaller equipment, involves securing the piece between the headstock and tailstock, and does not require hollowing to be done. This works well for smaller hobby projects - pens, pencils, etc. Faceplate turning, the other option, involves connecting the blank directly to the headstock of the lathe. Often most appropriate for bigger pieces, it also does have special requirements for the speed range of your lathe.

Knowing all these details, you should be well prepared to select the perfect wood blank for your project, and start turning your own wood creations.
